'How to open a closed box', by counsellor David Levy

'My school years were unhappy ones, as I was hyperactive, which made it hard to concentrate. My parents supported me in seeing various therapists and counsellors over the years but I remained in a pattern of being evasive and defensive. I only found out later that a chaotic lifestyle is typical of ADHD.

Some therapeutic interventions are a result of well-thought-out, well-timed interpretations, or challenges which catch the client in exactly the right moment; where the stars align and the path from words to conscious thought to unconscious understanding is unobstructed. Some are total accidents.

I don’t know which my own counsellor was going for that evening when she turned to me and said 'David, I can’t help you,' but I suspect neither she nor I could have known it would transpire to be a life-changing moment... 'You need something more intensive than seeing me once a week to break you down.'

My first thought was that I was going to need to find another therapist. But something about being ‘broken down’ resonated with me at a deeper level. 'Should I try the Hoffman Process?' I asked, as I was being hurried out of the room.

'Have a look,' she replied. 'You’ll know if it’s for you...'

We're grateful to author and Hoffman grad Kate Ruby for mentioning Hoffman in The Telegraph last weekend, as part of a touching and very funny article on her adventures in personal development:

'Past-life regression, hypnosis, psychics and psychedelics – these are just a few of the unusual, and sometimes downright crazy, approaches I have tried in the past 20 years. Some have been wonderful, some not so much...

...There were plenty of other things I tried that were worth every penny. There was the Hoffman Process: a week-long therapy boot camp that focuses on how damaged attachment patterns that get set up in childhood will continue to plague us in adult life. Its celebrity fanbase includes singer Justin Bieber and actress Sienna Miller, but it is more than a faddish psychological sticking plaster. The work I did there was profound and helped to tame the raging anxiety that has always plagued me.'

‘If you’re yelling, who yelled at you?’ Katy Perry talks Hoffman and couples therapy

Great to hear Hoffman being given a mention by Katy Perry too during a May podcast with US comedian Chelsea Handler. Here's a short excerpt:

'I went to this place — I’m sure you’ve heard of it — called the Hoffman Process. Orlando went before me. He came back after going and wasn’t leaning into all of my bullsh*t and so it was boring... And so a year later later I went to the Hoffman Process, and it’s amazing... You get to discover why you have these patterns and habits and where they’re coming from and all it’s really coming from mom or it’s coming from dad. So if you’re yelling, who yelled at you? It’s a learned thing. It profoundly changed my life. It’s the #1 thing I recommend when someone is ready for that next level in life.'

In the podcast, Katy also speaks candidly about the work she and her partner Orlando Bloom do to keep their relationship healthy, including regular couples therapy. 'We love it because it keeps us in tune, and the resentment can get really strong when you’re both working hard.'
