An Emotional Education, by Career and Life Coach, Bex Cockayne

"On one level I was ‘fine’. I was successful. I’d joined the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office aged 27 full of excitement and optimism. I was going to bring peace and help ‘change the world’. I’d been posted to Tunisia and Afghanistan and had spent the last seven years working in and on conflict environments. I’d studied at Oxford, the London School of Economics (LSE) and City University. I’d been a banker in Dubai and worked in a few other competitive industries too. On paper I was ‘winning’.

But something wasn’t right. I always felt like I was playing catch-up – one more promotion and then I’ll feel I’ve made it. Once I’m engaged with a baby on the way, I’ll know I’m capable and together. If I buy a house, I’ll finally be seen as respectable... It always felt like I was one step or achievement away from feeling good enough.

I took pride in who I was, but only in the ‘strong’ and professional bits. Whenever I’d needed an answer, I’d deferred to my intellect... I knew I had to do something different to create new situations in my life, but I felt scared, stuck and a bit lost as to what to do..."

‘It proved to be transformational’ Lisa Byrne, writing in Good Housekeeping

Thank you to journalist, PR supremo and Hoffman gradaute Lisa Byrne for mentioning the Hoffman Process in the latest issue of Good Housekeeping magazine. Lisa shared:

'Then a relative recommended The Hoffman Process, which I went through last September. This is a seven-day residential course established more than 50 years ago by Bob Hoffman. It involves an intensive week with no outside contact, where you focus solely on why you behave the way you do and are taught the tools to help you change your negative patterns. But for me, one of the best experiences was bashing a cushion with a baseball bat for an hour, to exorcise all the inner demons, such as grief and anger.

It proved to be transformational, but it’s not a quick fix. I am still a work in progress and often fall back into old patterns of not wanting to get out of bed, but the dark thoughts that once threatened to consume me have lifted.

When I think I am going down a negative path, the Hoffman tools have helped me to break the cycle. And simply practising gratitude has also been hugely beneficial.'
